BLACKFORD COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - An infant and his mother were killed Saturday morning in a car-train accident in Montpelier.

The Blackford County Sheriff’s Department confirms 10-month-old Xander Janero and his mother, 22-year-old Kristen M. Janero, residents of Montpelier, were pronounced dead at the scene. The two were thrown from the vehicle. They were not wearing seat belts.

The driver, 29-year-old Rodney Ray Brown of Montpelier, and his wife, 26-year-old Angela Brown also of Montpelier, were both transported to a Fort Wayne hospital in stable condition.

The crash occurred at 11:22 a.m. at the 200 block of W. High Street. The Blackford Country Sheriff’s Department says the crossing was equipped with warning lights and bells, which were working properly.

Mayor James McPherson says he has battled to get railroad crossing gates installed at that intersection.

“We've got two streets in Montpelier that don't have gates, and I have been on the railroad constantly for the last 10 years trying to get gates and I'm not getting anywhere. So maybe now, unfortunately after this accident, we can get somewhere."

McPherson says the intersection where the Janeros lost their lives is the most dangerous intersection in Montpelier.

“This is probably the worst intersection we've got in Montpelier because we've got another building right over here to the side and if you're headed west, which they were, you can't see the train coming until you're actually up near the track here."

The Blackford County Sheriff’s Department says the investigation is ongoing.
