FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- 12,000 pink ribbons throughout downtown Fort Wayne, each with the name of a breast cancer patient, friend or relative.

People bought the ribbons for $5, generating $60,000 for this year's Turn the Town Pink event.

Ruth Cook has volunteered for the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer for the past 20 years, and always buys a ribbon for a friend whose mother died of breast cancer.

"I put her name on a ribbon every year just because I love her and I don't want her to face that battle. And if she ever does, I want her to know that we are 20 years closer to a cure," Cook says.

As of last year, the Vera Bradley Foundation had raised more than $17.6 million.

"It goes to the Vera Bradley Foundation for Research laboratories at the Indiana University School of Medicine for very specific projects that... we actually have 40 researchers that are doing research on behalf of the Foundation right now," Cook says.

This year, the Foundation hopes to reach the goal of $20 million being donated to the cause. Why?

"There are still women, and men, who are battling breast cancer. And we've made tremendous strides throughout the 20 years, but we're determined to find a cure. Determined to improve all the women's lives, if they have been affected, with better treatment," says Lynda Houk of the Vera Bradley Foundation.

20 years ago, the odds of surviving breast cancer for five years was 75%. Today, it's 90%. Tomorrow? Maybe these ribbons and the money they generate will help provide a cure.
