Trademark Protection Canceled For Washington Redskins

June 18, 2014 Updated Jun 18, 2014 at 1:50 PM EST

WASHINGTON, D.C. (21Alive) -- The United States Patent and Trademark protection office has canceled the registration of the Washington Redskin's trademark.

The announcement came today via the Washington Post, that the name was considered "derogatory" and would no longer be protected as a trademark by the United States Government.

Federal trademark law does not permit trademarks that are derogatory or disparaging. The ruling will affect six of the team's trademarks, all including the world "Redskin."

This doesn't mean the Redskins will be forced to change their name, it merely means the name won't be protected and others will be able to use the name for profit if they want to.

An appeal is expected from the Washington Redskins.
