FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Noah joined Liam as the most popular baby boy name, while Ava overtook Olivia as the most popular name for girls, according to birth records filed in Allen County in 2013.

Those rankings are based on Allen County’s 6,662 births, down from 6,762 in 2012. For the 3,427 boys and 3,235 girls born last year, parents chose more than 1,300 different boy names and 1,600 different girl names.

While some of the names in the top ten stayed the same from the previous year, there were some changes in both names and rankings.

Carter (#2), Owen (#3), Landon (#8), Parker, Gabriel (#9, tie), Issac, Oliver, Luke and Michael (#10, tie) moved into the boys’ top ten this year while Ethan (#13) and Andrew (#16) fell from their ranks.

Charlotte (#7), Harper, Evelyn, Hannah (#8, tie) and Abigail (#9) climbed into the girls’ top ten, while Amelia (#11), Avery (#12), Ella (#12), and Claire (#17) dropped out.

Names beginning with the vowels A, E, I or O proved popular again with parents this year. Besides Ava and Olivia, the names Isabella (#3), Emma (#4), Addison (#6), Evelyn (#8), Abigail (#9) and Elizabeth (#10) were in the top 10 for girls. For boys, Owen (#3) and Elijah (#4), Alexander (#8) and Oliver (#10) made the top ten.

Parents also showed a preference for modern girl names, such as Arabella, Cadence, Cora, Hadley, Lyric, Journey, Skylar and Zoe (or Zhoe), and for alternate spellings, as in Aubree, Peighton, Emersyn, Khloe and Charlee. For boys, up-and-comers include Asher, Maximus, Lincoln, Roman, Beckett, Braxton, Callen, Graham, Gunner, Jace (or Jase), Julian, Kingston and Tanner.

While some parents preferred the unconventional, others stuck with more traditional names. Names that were popular years, or even decades ago, such as Charlotte (#7), Lucy (#16), Eleanor (#17) and Scarlett (#22) cracked the girls’ top 25. Names that made the top 25 on the boys side included Wyatt (#13), Benjamin (#15), Charles (#16) and Harrison (#23).
