FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Fort Wayne police say an attempted break-in turned fatal when a suspected burglar was shot and killed on the city's south side.

It happened before midnight Sunday in the 300 block of Melita Street south of Parkview Field and Downtown Fort Wayne.

Police were called to the scene after reports of a shooting.

Officers say they found Ricardo M. Hood, 33, lying outside of the home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Police believe Hood attempted to break into the home, but they say the homeowner armed himself and shot and killed him. The homeowner was not injured in the incident.

It is not clear if he will face charges.

The Allen County Coroner declared the manner of death a homicide, making it Allen County's 35th in 2013. A ruling of homicide by the coroner means that an individual died as the result of an act of another human being and does not necessarily imply criminal intent.

The shooting remains under investigation.
