Indiana (www.incnow.tv) - As many people start to clean up their yards for spring the Indiana State Police warn the trash you might find in the process could be detrimental to your health.
Often times trash bags filled with the remnants of one-pot meth labs are dumped on the side of the road, or on other people's property. And it’s those bags police say can be very harmful if you start opening them up and touching the materials and chemicals inside.
ISP collects bags of meth trash regularly. Trooper Andy Smith is one of the officers charged with the task of taking and sorting the hazardous materials and properly disposing of them.
Smith says what people should watch out for are plastic pop bottles filled with sand-like materials, plastic pop bottles with holes in the top and any bottles inside plastic bags.
"They could be hazardous to both touch or to breathe in. They could be a one-pot meth lab or a HCL generator. The one pot meth lab has ammonia gas that if you breathe it in it's harmful to your lungs," said Trooper Andy Smith, Indiana State Police.
Trooper Smith says to call 911 if you think trash dumped on or near your property is meth trash. Smith says an officer will come out and let you know if it’s safe or not. If it is meth related they will take it away and properly dispose of it.
