South Bend Suffering Major Power Outage (VIDEO)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (21Alive) -- Most of downtown South Bend is without power after a fire Thursday night damaged a transformer.

FOX28 reports that the outage was caused by a transformer fire near the Chase Building downtown. AEP has confirmed an equipment fire happened in the area and is waiting for smoke to clear in order to assess the damage. They estimate 800 customers could be affected.

The outage has caused many traffic lights to stop working and a number buildings downtown to lose power including the County City Building and the courthouse. Beacon Memorial Hospital is currently running on back-up generators and new patients are being sent to different hospitals.
