FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The holidays are a time spent with family, but a lot of times those in the military have to go without seeing loved ones.

However, that wasn't the case for one local family who was able to get their soldier home just in time.

Private Kennith Miler surprised his aunt and uncle after returning home Saturday afternoon.

Private Miler has been stationed at Scholfield Barricks in Hawaii and has been away from home for over a year. He was able to come home this year to spend the holidays with family and friends.

Other families are taking time this holiday season to honor U.S. veterans by placing remembrance wreaths on graves of the fallen.

Wreaths Across America culminated Saturday with an estimated 10,000 volunteers placing wreaths on grave sites at Arlington National Cemetery and many other memorials.

Simultaneous ceremonies were held throughout the day at more than 800 veterans' cemeteries or war memorial sites in all 50 states, as well as 20 foreign locations.

Northeast Indiana Search and Rescue sponsored the inaugural Fort Wayne Wreaths Across America event at Covington Memorial Gardens.
