FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- It's a rocky start to the school year for students and staff at one Fort Wayne high school, where a long-time teacher and coach was found dead in the school building over the week-end.

It’s not what you expect to deal with as kids return to classes.

52-year old Snider High School English teacher Bruce Crist died in his classroom on Saturday, where he was preparing for the school year.

In the past, he had served as the girls and boys tennis coach.

The Allen County Coroner's office ruled that Crist died of natural causes, and that no foul play is suspected.

City police say Crist had a history of heart problems.

Police say when he didn't come home Saturday night, his wife got worried and called authorities, who came to check on him.

" He came to work to get everything ready for the school year, and didn't come home, and that started the process of trying to locate him," said Snider Athletic Director Russ Isaacs, who worked with Crist.

" Snider, like all of the schools in this community, is an extremely close knit family, and when something happens to one of the members, it impacts everyone, so we will pray for the family," said Fort Wayne Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson.

The school system made grief counselors available for Monday’s first day of classes, in case any students or staff members were struggling with strong emotions over what happened.

The coroner's office says that the official cause of death will come after a pathologist's review, which could take several weeks before it's wrapped up.
