FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Say what you want about it, but this winter is one to remember. While we're busy bundling up, many street department employees are worried about keeping roads clear.
"We're almost getting down to the point where it's going to be tough to find salt," said North Barn Allen County Highway Supervisor, Randy Kanach.
The city of Fort Wayne has already spent more than a million dollars on salt, with their next delivery coming all the way from the east coast.
Kanach adds, "Everybody is in the same boat. I know LaPorte County, they ran out of salt earlier and they're having to get it out of Toledo [...] that comes at a pretty hefty price."
Drivers have been working around-the-clock, putting in long hours, and consistently hitting overtime throughout Indiana.
"They're very tired and we have trouble finding enough people to come in because they're so tired," said Kanach.
While drivers and plows may be at rest now, Tuesday will mark the beginning of a very different story.
