STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) -- Police responded to an accident with injuries on Nevada Mills Road at Jimmerson Lake Lane 350 early Sunday morning.

Deputies from the Steuben County Sheriff's Department arrived on the scene shortly after 3:10 a.m. and found a Chevrolet Trailblazer went off the road and hit several trees after the driver failed to negotiate a curve.

According to the police report, Steve Johnston, 47, and Bret Jeremy Asselin, 28, both from Fort Wayne were found standing outside the vehicle with visible head and face injuries. Both stated that they were in the vehicle, but an unknown subject that fled on foot was driving.

Marshal Brooke Norton of the Orland Police Department arrived on the scene with her K-9 to attempt to track the unknown subject. However, police noticed evidence that Johnston was the driver. No K-9 scent was found indicating that anyone had fled from the vehicle.

Johnston was transported directly to Parkview Regional Medical Center from the scene for a head injury.

Asselin refused medical treatment and was placed in custody at the scene on an unrelated charge.

The accident remains under investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff's Department. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.
