Rumors Of Child Abduction Ring Unfounded, Peddlers Have Permits In Some Areas

NORTHEAST INDIANA (21Alive) -- It's all over Facebook feeds and is filling up our email inboxes. It's an alert about a possible abduction ring that may be operating in our area.

We've received reports from area residents, some saying they know someone who has witnessed men going door-to-door selling children's books as a rouse to stake out homes and abduct children. Others say the man has come to their home.

An article in The Post & Mail cites an incident where a man with a Russian accent was selling books in Churubusco Wednesday morning. The article says that the Churubusco Police Department checked out the guy and released him after everything checked out OK. They say the man had a peddler's permit in the town and was driving a silver 4-door sedan.

Columbia City police say no one has a peddler's permit for the sale of children's books in the city but that they have had two reports of this happening in town.

The Fort Wayne police say they haven't received any reports of this happening yet.

No child abduction reports have been filed in Fort Wayne, Churubusco or Columbia City.

The mayor of Columbia City says if you feel threatened, do not answer the door and if you answer the door and still feel threatened, call police.

Below is the link that has been circling the internet. The man pictured on this page is former presidential candidate Howard Dean (D-Vt.).
