FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Fort Wayne sees a disturbing year of homicides. 21Alive asked people what they think of all the violence in the city they call home.

"We need to cut it down. We sure need to cut it down," said Fort Wayne resident, Clarence Driver.

Resident Lu Platt added, "It has escalated, but the time that we live in, I think it's going to continue to escalate.

Some residents from Fort Wayne gave suggestions on how to turn the city around.

Trying to educate today's youth, placing a stronger focus on parenting, and spending time as a family topped the list.

Fort Wayne resident, Chris McGuire dug a little deeper, "It's up to us to recognize we're all part of this community. We all have to stand behind each other. When we see somebody in trouble, when we see somebody whose got some really heavy stuff going on, talk to them. Share with them. There's a bigger problem than preventing people from pulling the trigger. It's getting inside their hearts."

Several people also expressed their prayers and best wishes for Fort Wayne's mayor and soon-to-be police chief, Garry Hamilton.

The common hope: 2014 has brighter days ahead.
