FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) --- With warmer weather coming this weekend, there are some tips homeowners should pay attention to, so they can avoid damage down the road.

We all know snow is piled up everywhere right now.

As you were shoveling your driveway or patio this past Sunday, it's possible some of it got thrown along the side of your house.

Because of the 40-degree weather that's coming, we'll see the melting process begin soon.

You've got to be careful about that if you've got a basement.

You should clear the snow away from basement windows and window wells.

Rick Wolf with Brueggemann Lumber says these are points of vulnerability to basement flooding.

" Water runs down in there and it cycles down into your sump pump and then that sump pump ejector hose may be frozen, now that could burn up your sump pump. If you can, make sure that when you're doing the snow around your driveway, around your sidewalks, throw it out into the yard, away, so it can drain away from your home," Wolf said.

From the basement to your roof.

Long icicles hanging from your gutters, that's a warning sign of ice dams.

They are ridges of ice that form at the edge of your roof, and keep melting snow from draining properly.

You want to brush or pull the snow down, because if it stays on the roof, moisture can work its way beneath your shingles, causing leaks and gutter failures.

" You'll see water leaks in your ceiling, along your doors, around a window or underneath an area along the outside wall of your home. You want to maybe make sure your gutters are flowing, and when it gets decent again, you can add a gutter heat cable," Wolf said.

One last thing, if you get some time, you might want to get up in your attic, to make sure snow hasn't poured through vents, creating drifts, which will eventually melt and could cause other water damage.

The joys of winter.
