Standoff Suspect Later Escapes Police Custody (VIDEO)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- A suspect in an early morning standoff with police escaped from St. Joseph's hospital and was later apprehended in the St. Mary's river.

According to police, Tracey Salter, 21, was being held at St. Joseph's hospital after he was arrested earlier in the morning on an active warrant for attempted robbery. While being held at the hospital, Salters was able to escape from custody and exit the buidling

He reportedly made his way north towards the St. Mary's river and jumped in near the Van Buren St. bridge. Officers used an inflatable raft to help pursue Salters as he made his way down the river. Salters eventually stopped in the middle of the river and the water rescue team made their way out to him to apprehend him. He was taken away in the back of an ambulance.

Police responded to the 8400 block of Lakeside drive just after 1 a.m. on a reported domestic battery case. When they arrived, police spoke to a woman indicating that she was involved in a domestic dispute with 21-year-old Tracey Salter, of Fort Wayne. Police wanted to speak to Salter about the dispute but were told he was in an apartment with an assault rifle. An active warrant on an attempted robbery charge was also out for Salter.

Salter failed to respond to police after several attempts and the Emergency Services Team had to use an explosive device to breach the apartment door. Salter surrendered peacefully and was taken into police custody. An assault rifle was removed from the apartment by detectives.

Charges are pending.
