Man Accidentally Shoots Himself At Renaissance Pointe YMCA

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Police are on the scene of a shooting at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA

Initial reports indicated that a man accidentally shot himself in the neck. According to an officer on the scene, the man forgot he had his gun in his gym bag and dropped the bag on the floor and the gun discharged.

The man is reportedly in fair condition but was taken to the hospital.

We have crews on the way to the scene and will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

Statement From YMCA
This morning, Monday, April 7, there was an incident which occurred at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA. A person had a small hand gun in his gym bag. The gun accidently discharged and grazed the chin of the person in possession of the gun. 911 was called and our staff immediately provided care. The incident was isolated in the area of the locker room.

The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne has a long history of providing a safe environment for our members and the community to enjoy. Our current policies prohibit carrying or concealing a weapon or any object that may be used as a weapon in our facilities and on our grounds. These policies and procedures are in place in order to provide a safe environment. We will evaluate our policies in order to ensure a continued safe environment.

It's important for you to know that, as is our practice, we will investigate the incident thoroughly and are cooperating with the local authorities in their investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to this man and his family and friends. We are sure you will join us in respecting their privacy during this difficult time.
