22-Year-Old Man Killed Trying To Foot-Race Across Tracks To Beat Train (VIDEO)

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- A 22-year-old man was struck by a train while trying to cross the tracks in New Haven last Friday.

The New Haven Police and EMS units were dispatched to a personal injury accident at the railroad crossing in the 500 block of Broadway in downtown New Haven shortly after 11 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses at the scene told police they were walking to a nearby gas station and heard a train whistle and wanted to beat the train by running on foot across the tracks. The witnesses the stopped running because they weren't going to be able to get across before the train, but the Derek R. Sowers, 22, continued running and was struck at the crossing.

The Allen County Coroner has released the cause of death as blunt force trauma. This is the 12th traffic fatality in Allen County in 2013.
