MARION, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Indiana State Police and Grant County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle crash on State Road 9 around 2:37 this afternoon.

Masharne Southern, 42 of Marion, Indiana, was traveling northbound on State Road 9 near Grant County Road 600 North when he lost control on the ice covered road and slid perpendicular to State Road 9, crossing the center line. His vehicle was struck by a southbound vehicle on the passenger side. Clint Mauller, 30 also of Marion was a front seat passenger and was partially ejected.

Both Mauller and Southern were transported to Marion General Hospital where Mauller succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Southern was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital with massive internal injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Diane Walls, 46 of Converse, Indiana was transported by family members to Marion General Hospital with a complaint of back and neck pain.

Both Walls and Southern were wearing seat belts which Indiana State Police believes helped reduce the severity of their injuries. Mauller was not wearing a seat belt.

Police do not believe that alcohol nor illegal drug use is believed to be a factor in the crash.
