INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (21Alive) -- One woman is dead and one man is critically injured after a shooting incident on the north side of Indianapolis early Sunday morning, according to police.

Officers were called to the 6400 block of Park Central Drive West at the Park Hoover Condominiums around 1:00 a.m. Sunday, where they found a man and woman arguing outside one of the buildings.

According to police, the man shot the woman at point-blank range before pointing his gun at officers. Both officers fired on the man, but police said it's not yet clear if the man fired shots at the officers.

Police said the man ran to the back of the apartment building and was later found lying in the grass with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The victim and suspect were later identified as Candice Hunter, 24, and Joshua Higgins, 22, both of Indianapolis.

Higgins was taken to Eskenazi Hospital where he was declared to be in critical contition. Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither of the officers were hurt in the confrontation.

The Indianapolis Metro Police Department said they are not releasing the names of the officers involved, but they will both be placed on administrative duty during the investigation, which is standard practice.

According to police, the woman's two young children -- a 6-month-old and a 23-month-old -- were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting and have been placed in temporary custody with the Department of Child Services.
