FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- Hundreds of thousands of dollars will soon be flowing into Fort Wayne to expand health care services for lower income individuals, courtesy of the Affordable Care Act.
It’s a positive development under Obamacare, which has been hammered by critics lately.
There has been an avalanche of complaints about the website people have tried to use to sign up for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Now, we learn the federal initiative is bringing a good chunk of change to town with intentions of providing better health care to folks who need it most.
Neighborhood Health Clinics Incorporated has been running a facility on South Calhoun Street for a while now.
It treated nearly 16,000 patients in 2012 for medical and dental issues.
Now we get word that the Department of Health and Human Services is turning over $650,000 to the organization, to start and operate a sister clinic at the corner of Hessen Cassel and Paulding Roads.
" And there are very few medical or dental resources in that part of town, and so, we're reaching out to a part of town that is very much underserved and has very unique kinds of needs for medical and dental services," said Mary Haupert, the President & CEO of Neighborhood Health Clinics.
Parkview Hospital is a partner in the endeavor.
Mary Haupert says Parkview will either build a new facility, or renovate an existing property at that location, then will lease space to Neighborhood Health Clinics to do business there.
The facility is expected to open in the spring of 2014, and is estimated to serve about 3,000 patients.
The Hessen Cassel and Paulding Road clinic will offer a few less services, compared to the South Calhoun location, according to Haupert.
It is also envisioned as a place for folks to get help enrolling in new health insurance options in the health insurance marketplaces.
