GREENSBORO, N.C. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - University of Notre Dame will join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football.
Notre Dame's admittance was approved unanimously by the current ACC presidents.
No timetable was given for Notre Dame's move from the Big East Conference to the ACC; but the Fightin' Irish will become the 11th member in the league.
"Notre Dame enhances the league's unique blend of public and private institutions that are international scope," ACC commissioner John Swofford said in a statement released by the conference. "This is a terrific milestone in the evolution of the ACC."
Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame vice president and athletic director, echoed the commissioner's sentiments.
"We have monitored the changing conference landscape for many months," Swarbrick said. "Moving to the ACC is the best course of action for us."
Notre Dame's football team will remain independent of a conference, but will play five ACC opponents each season as part of the deal.
