FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – 21Alive News has learned who Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry will announce as the city’s new police chief.
Corinne Rose worked her sources for this story for weeks, and confirms that the current deputy chief of the city's southeast quadrant, Garry Hamilton, is set to be announced as Fort Wayne's newest police chief.
A news conference with the mayor has been scheduled for next week.
52-year old Garry Hamilton is a Fort Wayne native who graduated from Northrop High School, and Manchester College.
After working in various positions after college, including in the Wayne Township trustee's office, Hamilton joined the Fort Wayne police department in 1994.
He quickly became a detective, assigned to the robbery - homicide division, then on the cold case squad.
After 12 years in the detective bureau, Hamilton was promoted to sergeant, and moved to the internal affairs division.
After two years there, he was promoted to captain of the southeast quadrant, then served as a liaison officer with the Allen County prosecutor's office, making sure cases transferred smoothly.
In 2010, Hamilton was promoted to deputy chief of the northeast quadrant of Fort Wayne and in 2012, became deputy chief in charge of the southeast division.
Before learning Mayor Henry had selected Hamilton to be chief, we talked with a community activist this afternoon who he said he wants the new chief to reflect the southeast's diversity, know the area, and be visible there.
“You need to get out here among the people. Be visible out here, especially during the summertime. That's when crime seems to be more prevalent, in the summertime. He needs to get out here and mix with the people,” says James Redmond.
Hamilton's appointment marks the first time in the city's history that the police department will be headed by an African American.
