FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Could downtown Fort Wayne host things like wheelchair basketball tourneys in a multi-use sports arena?
The AWS foundation announced Tuesday that it has commissioned a study to assess the feasibility of building an arena downtown to focus on serving the needs of individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.
"The primary focus is going to be those who are challenged mentally and physically, so that's what's very exciting, nobody else does it, and if it's built right, we could really be a national contender," Mayor Henry said.
Henry says legacy money could be used to help pay for construction of an arena, but he does not see new tax dollars going toward the project. The feasibility study should be complete by the end of the year.
