Fort Wayne, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter) - More than 200 ITT Exelis employees in Fort Wayne are losing their jobs by the end of the month.
Tim White, a spokesperson for ITT Exelis, confirms that more than 200 employees have received layoff notices. 95 of those employees had been brought back on short-term basis to meet a surge and they knew they would be let go at some point. The remainder of the positions were permanent employees who worked on the SINCGARS (Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems) for the United States Army.
There are two reasons for the layoffs, according to White. He says the U.S. Army is nearing their acquisition objective with the SINCGARS. He also says this is a time of transition for the company. They are currently testing other communications solutions in New Mexico in an effort to bring new products to the military and stay competitive.
The company has agreements in place with the union to help the employees and they will abide by their commitment.
The jobs will be eliminated by the end of November.
White says, "This is a tough day and the layoffs are very unfortunate."
