FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Two Fort Wayne mothers appeared in court Tuesday, each charged in horrifying cases of child abuse and neglect.

You may remember hearing about these stories in early January.

25-year old Marquisha Whitten is charged with felony neglect.

Her 5-year old son's fingers and toes were frostbitten last month when wind chills were 30 below.

Police say on January sixth, Whitten was drinking and walking home with her son to her Eden Green apartment.

When her son fell in the snow and couldn't get up, court documents show Whitten left him there while she kept walking.

The boy was found 10 minutes later and rushed to the hospital, where doctors were able to save his fingers and toes.

Whitten's blood alcohol content was reportedly 0.29%.

A judge set a Whitten’s trial for may 28th.

And at her initial court appearance, 28-year old Ashley Strong of Fort Wayne pleaded not guilty to felony battery and two counts of felony child neglect.

Police say on January tenth, she told them she threw her three-week old girl against a wall at her colony bay apartment because the newborn wouldn't stop crying.

She initially told police her three-year old daughter dropped the newborn.

The baby was last listed in critical condition with a skull fracture and brain bleed.

Court documents show Strong hadn't slept in two days and tested positive for cocaine.

She is due back in court February 25th.

Judges have ordered the women not to have contact with their kids.
