FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Get to know someone by walking a mile in their shoes. That was the idea Saturday morning at Headwaters Park.
"Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" has men complete a one-mile walk in women's red high-heeled shoes in order to help them better understand and appreciate women's experiences.
In organizing the walk, the Fort Wayne Women's Bureau hopes to improve gender relationships and decrease the potential for violence as well as educate the community about recovery services for women.
Currently in Indiana, one in five women and one in twelve men are victims of sexual assault and the women's bureau looks to put a dramatic decrease in those numbers.
“I think because the numbers are so high it's good to be aware of what that is and it's good to show your support and to show that you have respect for your fellow human being, man or woman, we need to treat them all with respect and not abuse them,” said Kathleen Alter, Executive Director of the Women’s Bureau.
21Alive’s own Curtis Smith was emcee for the event and received a very special award as he took the microphone.
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry (D) presented Curtis with his lapel pin to honor his work in the community.
