FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Members of the Fort Wayne Police Department's and Fort Wayne Fire Department's newest recruiting class met with Mayor Tom Henry, D-Fort Wayne, on Monday.

The mayor spoke with the recruits at the Ivy Tech South Campus: Public Safety Academy as part of the academy classes.

"To look out and see all those cadets sitting there really makes me proud that the City of Fort Wayne stood up and said we need some additional public safety personnel."

The 22 police recruits and 25 firefighter recruits are part of a proposal from the Henry administration and a fiscal policy group passed by City Council last year.

Public Safety Director Rusty York and police chief Garry Hamilton and fire chief Amy Biggs also spoke to the cadets.
