FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - A boy is fighting for his life after being shot in the back in an alley on the city's south side.

Fort Wayne Police say they do have a person of interest in custody, and the FWPD Gang Unit was instrumental in making the apprehension.

It happened in the 800 block of Colerick Street, just north of Weiser Park, around 8:15 Saturday night.

Fort Wayne Police have not released the name of the victim but say he is under the age of 18.

After being shot, the boy told Fort Wayne Police officers he could not feel his legs. He's listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

Although several people reported hearing gunshots police don’t believe there are any witnesses to the shooting. However, they do have some leads from the victim.

“It does help that the victim possibly knew who it was. So as his condition changes, if it changes, any information that he can give will be helpful and possibly lead officers in the right direction as to who possibly shot him,” said Officer Jeremy Webb, FWPD.

Police say they have a person of interest in custody, but they are not calling that person a suspect at this time.
