Killer Walnut Tree Fungus Found In Indiana (VIDEO)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has discovered a deadly walnut tree fungus in Indiana.

The fungus is known to cause Thousand Cankers Disease was found in Yellowwood State Forest in Brown County. TCD affects most walnut trees but is especially fatal to black walnut trees.

The walnut plantation in which the fungus was discovered in has been quarantined by the State Entomologist Phil Marshall.

“We have much to lose from the spread of TCD,” Marshall said. “It is important that we repeat the study to understand the role of the weevil and occurrence of the fungus in the trees.”

The Black Walnut Tree is Indiana's most valuable tree based on the dollar value of the wood.
