Jailed Man Charged In Infant Abuse Case

December 27, 2013 Updated Dec 27, 2013 at 3:39 PM EST

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) -- A man, already serving time in jail for an unrelated matter, was served with a arrest warrant charging him with neglect of a 3-month-old that resulted in injury.

Friday just before 1:00 pm, Chad A. Traster, 37 was served with an arrest warrant at the Steuben County Jail charging him with one count of class C felony neglect of a dependent causing injury.

Traster was serving time in the jail on an unrelated matter when the arrest warrant was served. The arrest comes after a more than a yearlong Sheriff’s Office investigation that began back in November of 2012 with a report of suspected child abuse involving a then 3-month-old child.

The incident allegedly took place at a rural Steuben Township home in the 4500 block of south Old US 27. The incident turned into a death investigation subsequently when the child passed away. It was determined that the child’s death was due to circumstances unrelated to the original injuries that were reported initially.

The Sheriff’s Office spent more than a year gathering information and working with the Steuben County Prosecutor’s Office preparing the case. Traster is being held without bond on the new arrest pending an initial court appearance.
