INDIANA (21Alive) – People around Indiana are getting scammed out of their money by people masquerading as IRS agents.
IRS spokesperson Luis Garcia told 21Alive Monday that phone and email scams are popping up around the state, and they’re targeting retirees.
Garcia says the phone scammers will call claiming to be an IRS agent, and say you’re behind on filing your taxes. Garcia says the scammers are so sophisticated that “IRS” will appear on the caller ID.
He says once they get you on the phone the caller will request immediate payment through a wire transfer or by credit card. If you don’t cooperate the scammer will be rude, forceful, and use vulgar language, and then threaten to call the police or have your license revoked.
