FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The American Heart Association is hosting its Northeast Indiana Heart Walk Saturday.

The walk will help people like 11- year -old Aiden Eastom.

He is living with two heart defects, and he underwent open heart surgery when he was just a couple of years old.

He loves playing sports and his family hopes some exercise this weekend will help Aiden, the American Heart Association and those walking.

“We walk to help raise funds for continued research," Aiden’s mother Stephanie Eastom said. "We think it's important so if Aiden does have to have another surgery, research can be done so it's not such a dangerous surgery and for other kids like him as well."

The benefit walk is Saturday at Ivy Tech's north campus near Stellhorn and Saint Joe Road.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. in the morning and opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m.
