ELKHART, Ind. (21Alive) -- 3 people are dead, including the gunman after a shooting inside an Elkhart, Indiana supermarket.

Elhart police say they responded to an "active shooting" report at the Martin's Supermarket just after 10:00p.m. Wednesday. When they entered the store they heard a gunshot, then reportedly saw the suspect, Shawn Bair, 22.

Investigators say the suspect and officers exchanged gunfire before the suspect was reportedly hit and fatally wounded in the fire fight.

20-year-old Krystle Dikes, a store employee, and Rachelle Godfread, 44, believed to be a shopper, were the two women found dead inside the store.

Investigators say they found a large caliber, semi-automatic handgun and a large knife near the suspect. They say the crime scene is very large.

Elhart Police say they have handed the investigation over to the Indiana State Police. They are required to do that in a police action shooting.

Martin's released a statement on their Facebook page around 12:25 am saying:
