FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – General Motors Fort Wayne Assembly plant makes history.

GM Fort Wayne Assembly is the first automotive plant in the North America to generate electricity from landfill gas.

GM held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the accomplishment Wednesday afternoon. GM has been burning landfill gas since 2002, but has been successfully using it to power their facility since May 29.

The landfill gas, or methane, powers approximately 30 percent of the facility.
