FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Protecting an already vulnerable population.

They're the people society likes to sweep under the rug, but Thursday night, a major push to keep them safe.

The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission hosted a fundraiser Thursday night at the Landmark Conference Center, where about 200 guests were expected to attend.

The overall goal is to raise $50,000 to pay for a new camera system at the Superior Street facility that helps homeless people in Fort Wayne.

The money will also help pay for some manpower to add another security presence at the shelter.

Recently, some staff and clients have been attacked, so the Mission wants to keep everyone as safe as possible.

That includes clients who are already at their most vulnerable points in their lives and are struggling with their emotions and situation in life

“And so you come to a place like this, and they're wrestling with frustrations, their own sense of not having what they need. So it creates, sometimes, some difficulties and some friction with folks that would come to us,” says the Rev. Donovan Coley, Sr., CEO of The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission.

While there already are some security cameras at the Rescue Mission, there aren’t enough.

Pastor Coley says raising $50,000 will buy enough cameras to cover every area that's needed, and again, provide some manpower on site, just to make sure things don't get out of hand.

He says a weapon has never been confiscated and no outbursts have ever been something that couldn't be handled, but he wants to be proactive.
