FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - School is out but summer vacation isn't putting an end to school lunches. The Fort Wayne Community School District started its summer meal program Monday.
More than 21,000 students in the Fort Wayne district qualify for free meals during the school year so school officials believe this program is a necessity.
"For some kids, it may be their only healthy meal on any given day and we recognize that, so we think it's really important that we have this program,” said Krista Stockman, Fort Wayne Community Schools.
The USDA funded program runs Monday through Friday throughout the ten week summer vacation. There are more than 40 locations in the city where kids can get a free lunch and snacks.
In addition to making sure the kids get a healthy meal it's also about keeping kids active, and involved in the community.
“At the parks and the libraries, there are other things going on so it gets them out, away from the TV, into a library where there's books, or out to the parks where, you know, there may be some more physical activities that they can participate in,” said Stockman.
For one mom, she didn't plan on going Monday but stumbled upon the free lunches while at the library with her kids. She says she will definitely go back again.
"They have story time after the lunch and then they have playtime so the kids are already wanting to stay longer,” said Andrea Mace, Mother.
And those activities are often the favorite part of the lunches for the kids who attend.
"Every year they don't do the same thing over and over again. They always do something different and it's always cool to do it,” said Kayla Tun, 10-year-old student.
Families do not need to qualify for free lunches during the summer. Any child under the age of 18 can go and get a free lunch at any of the locations.
