FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – After a long and brutal winter, one of the most popular attractions in the area is finally open, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.

The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo opened its gates for its 49th season Saturday morning.

The staff has been hard at work in the offseason, completing its first phase of the Australian Adventure, which includes a new entrance, concessions and new restrooms.

Despite the recent construction, the staff says they're just excited about opening up again.

“It's an amazing thing here at the zoo to go from closed one day to open the next day, and to see the excitement building, exhibits getting cleaned up. Especially after the rough winter we've had plowing all of the snow and getting everything in. It's wonderful to see the flowers blooming and the peacocks with their wings open, and all of the children here to see all of the animals,” said Anne Baker with the zoo.

The zoo is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. every day from now until October.
