FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A former Blackhawk Middle School teacher and wrestling coach pleaded guilty Friday to a felony for having sex with one of his students.
After a guilty plea hearing, Justin Edwards made references to Bible verses that would appear to scold those who would judge him for his wrongdoing.
The 38-year old Edwards had been out on bond, but he was taken back into custody after admitting guilt to a sexual misconduct with a minor charge.
The plea calls for a 12-year sentence, with six years to be served in prison.
A 14-year old student told authorities she and Edwards had an ongoing relationship involving sex.
That relationship began when the girl was in middle school.
She said the two had intercourse in the middle school wrestling mat room this past summer.
We spoke to Edwards' stepmom after the hearing.
Lin Edwards/Defendant's Stepmom: " Just very tragic situation, very sad, we're all very sad."
Reporter: " Anything to say, Justin?"
Justin Edwards/Pleads Guilty to Sexual Misconduct: " Matthew 7, read it, and I Corinthians 5:13."
Matthew 7, verse 1 says, "Do not judge or you too will be judged."
The I Corinthians reference says, "God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked person from among you."
Sentencing is scheduled for April 11th.
If the plea is accepted, Edwards would do three years in prison, not six, because in Indiana, prisoners get one day credit for every day served behind bars.
