MARION, Ind. (21Alive) - Former Marion fire chief Stephen Gorrell has admitted to stealing thousands of dollars from the city while serving as chief.

Gorrell, 51, of Upland, pleaded guilty Tuesday morning in Grant County courts seven felony counts of theft in a pre-sentencing investigation report.

Court documents say Gorrell took thousands of dollars from the City of Marion by selling back sick days and vacation days he had not earned.

Gorrell also claimed pay adjustments over a five-year period for certifications he did not receive, according to court documents.

Gorrell retired as police chief in 2012, prior to the investigation.
