FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Former IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell files a federal lawsuit against Purdue University to get his job back, claiming gender discriminiation.

Wartell is in Florida right now and said we needed to direct questions to his attorneys. Those calls were not returned. But Wartell did say the support he's received from the public means a lot to him.

Wartell's federal suit alleges Purdue fired him because he is a man and that then-chancellor France Cordova said in a meeting she wanted to hire more women.

The court documents claim Cordova specifically pointed to a picture of Wartell and said, "I am going to replace this one with a woman."

Purdue's policy requires administrators to retire at age 65, and Wartell claims he was the first chancellor not to be granted an extension.

He was 65 when he was fired in 2012 and replaced by Vicky Carwein, a 64-year old woman.

Wartell's lawsuit includes four counts of gender discrimination, violations of his due process rights and breach of contract.

The lawsuit seeks his reinstatement as IPFW's chancellor, back pay and benefits, attorney fees and damages.

France Cordova left Purdue in 2012 after five years to head the Smithsonian Institution and was replaced as Purdue's president by former governor Mitch Daniels.

A Purdue vice president said the university doesn't discuss pending litigation.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Former IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell has filed a federal discrimination suit against Purdue University, alleging he was fired because he is male.

The lawsuit accuses former Purdue Chancellor France Cordova, a female, of saying that before her term as president was over she wanted to hire more women in administrative roles and "specifically pointed to a picture of Wartell on a board and said 'I am going to replace this one with a woman,'" during a meeting in late 2010 or early 2011.

In 2011, Purdue's retirement age requirement forced Wartell out of IPFW. Requests that he be allowed to stay by IPFW were denied. He was replaced by Vicky Carwein, 64, who was one year short of the required age of retirement that had forced Wartell out.
