Police Track Footprints To Suspected Car Thief

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind (21Alive) -- Early in the morning, Officers from the Steuben County Sheriff's Department arrested a 27-year-old man suspected of stealing a vehicle after they tracked footprints in the snow to a ditch where he was hiding.

An area resident had contacted Steuben County Communications reporting a possible vehicle theft that happened on Toledo Street in Fremont. Another resident called in advising that a man could be seen trying to hide in a ditch just south of Feather Valley Road on CR 100 E.

Officers arrived and found the car in a ditch on Feather Valley Road abandoned. The tracked fresh footprints in the snow that went through a field and led to a ditch on CR 100 E where they found Levi Stetler of Ashley hiding.

Stetler was transported to the Steuben County Jail and booked on the charges of:

-Class D Felony Auto Theft
-Class A Misdemeanor Operating While Intoxicated
-Class A Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended with a prior conviction
