FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- The Indiana Department of Transportation had a meeting Thursday to explain new traffic signals for the Fort Wayne area.

Three new signals will be installed on SR1/Dupont Rd. that will have flashing yellow arrows for "protected-permissive left turns". These types of signals have not been in the area before.

A steady red arrow will indicate that drivers must stop and wait. A steady yellow arrow will indicate that drivers should stop if they can do so safely. A steady green arrow will indicate that drivers can proceed with the left turn.

The flashing yellow arrow is the one that will be different from what area drivers are accustomed to. A flashing yellow arrow means that you may proceed with the left turn after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Before a steady green arrow would change just to a solid green dot to indicate this sort of traffic direction.
