FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded over $19,000 worth of equipment to the Fort Wayne Police Department Tuesday afternoon.

Firehouse Subs gave the FWPD 17 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at a value of $19,700. The donated devices will be placed in squad cars to ensure police officers are prepared to provide life-saving assistance if a citizen goes into cardiac arrest.

In 2005, Firehouse Subs created the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment, and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations. Through the non-profit 501(c)(3), Firehouse Subs has given $7.7 million to hometown heroes in 38 states and Puerto Rico, including more than $186,300 in Indiana.

Throughout the month of October, all Firehouse Subs restaurants will celebrate Public Safety Month by encouraging patrons to purchase a $1 or $5 medallion in order to raise much-needed funds for the Foundation. Guests who purchase a medallion will receive a free Duracell 9-volt battery for their home smoke detector, while supplies last.

Each restaurant recycles leftover, five-gallon pickle buckets and sells them to guests for $2. Donation canisters on register counters explain the non-profit's mission and collect spare change, while the Round Up Program allows guests to "round up" their bill to the nearest dollar. All funds raised benefit the Foundation.
