FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- One of the more disturbing aspects of Wednesday's homicide is that it happened in front of so many children waiting for the school bus. And Fort Wayne Community Schools is stepping up to help those small witnesses.
It's a jarring image -- kids skipping off to class just beyond crime scene tape.
And yet dozens of children waiting to get on their school bus witnessed that brutal shooting death -- something no one should have to see, let alone a child.
Abbett and Irwin elementary schools and Scott Academy were immediately put on a modified lockdown.
"They were told when students arrive, make sure that you have adults out there to get them into the building safely, make sure doors are locked, which is always the case, but today, be extra vigilant in making sure doors are locked, and that you're really monitoring who's going in and out of the building," says Krista Stockman, Fort Wayne Community Schools spokeswoman.
Administrators brought in counselors from the Bowen Center to help students process what they saw.
And they will continue to be available to students who need them.
"Some of the children may be very young and they may not even realize what they saw. And so as they start hearing about what happened, either from their peers or when they go home tonight, they may suddenly realize, wait, I saw that happen. That's what was going on. And that could have a profound impact on them," Stockman says.
So teachers are keeping an eye out for students who show signs of needing help.
"We would ask that if any parents hear their children talking about it, or maybe think their child saw something, to let us know. We will do everything we can to help them and their children. As a community, we need to make sure that we're not letting these things happen. We need to remember that there are little eyes watching all the time, and this kind of thing really will affect these children," says Stockman.
Fort Wayne Community Schools has a contract with Bowen Center, so counselors are brought in as they're needed in a variety of situations.
