FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Fort Wayne police are investigating a vehicle crash on the city's southwest side.
The accident happened around 9:45 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Jefferson Boulevard and South Bend Drive.
Preliminary investigation indicates a young man driving a black Chevy Cavalier was traveling Eastbound on West Jefferson. The Cavalier attempted to pass another vehicle that was heading eastbound and lost control, fish tailing into a guard rail. The driver's side of the vehicle struck the guard rail pinning the driver inside. The Fort Wayne Fire Department extracted the driver.
Initial reports indicated it was a fatal crash but later it was reported the victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and upgraded to serious condition.
Eastbound lanes on West Jefferson are closed, coming from Coventry. Traffic is being redirected to South Bend Drive.
Authorities believe weather was a factor. The light rain, fog and mist contributed to the visibility along with slick roadway conditions.
