FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – The Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County assembled 100 boxed Thanksgiving dinners for military families in need Saturday morning.
The meals, which include at 12-pound turkey, potatoes and pumpkin pie among other Thanksgiving staples, feed about eight people and cost $36.
The executive pastor of the Associated Churches, Roger Reece, says he and other volunteers are given a chance to thank military families through this service.
“We put all of this together and put the boxes together and the food in the box, but we write a little message on the flap of the envelope just saying, ‘Thank you.’ And that’s the great part. It’s an opportunity for us just to say thank you.”
When asked about the impact of the donation, Connie S. Douthat, 122nd Fighter Wing Airmen & Family Readiness Program Manager, explained, "At Thanksgiving we are able to give some of them gas cards to get to a family gathering, and the meal that is provided by Associated Churches gives them a way to contribute to the larger meal when they arrive at the celebration."
The boxes will be delivered to the 122nd Fighter Wing of the Indiana Air National Guard on Tuesday.
