DEFIANCE, Ohio (21Alive) -- It's a horrific mystery that might never be solved.
Detectives in Defiance, Ohio are struggling to understand why a man killed his wife, daughter and granddaughter, then killed himself.
To look at it, you'd never know that the door of this modest home in Defiance would hide a horrific scene.
After relatives had been unable to reach the family living inside for more than 24 hours, they stopped by.
Inside, 61-year old Christine, 42-year old Zoila and 15-year old Rebecca Garza shot to death while they slept.
Police say 68-year old Bob Garza killed himself with the same small caliber handgun nearby.
"Mr. Garza had apparently, recently had a stroke. And from our investigation and speaking with family members, they think that was a big contributing factor due to some changes that they had seen," says Defiance County Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Clawson.
Investigators say Garza had not been quite as sharp since the stroke, and that his surviving children believe after-effects of Agent Orange from his service in Vietnam were taking their toll on his mind.
Still, there had been no contact with police... no indication something like this might happen.
Kenneth Strayer has lived next door to the Garzas for 18 years.
"Yeah, it's a shock to all of us, you know? When you saw the police cars and all the commotion, what'd you think? Oh, I didn't know what to make. I thought somebody had got in there and killed 'em. I wouldn't have ever suspected that he did," Strayer says.
Autopsies will be performed in Toledo, but on paper, it's an open and shut case of triple-murder, suicide.
But that leaves one burning question.
Sources close to the investigation tell me Bob Garza did not leave a note. So the rest of the family may never know why he did it.
