FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Preventing crime is a key issue in the Fort Wayne neighborhoods.
Between September 6th and September 19th police received dozens of calls of reported break-ins or attempted robberies in the Southwood Park area near Foster Park.
Monday night residents and law enforcement gathered at Shawnee Library Branch for various ideas on how to avoid becoming a victim.
Police offered tips like closing and locking windows, putting away valuables, having the proper locks on doors and never taking matters into your own hands.
“We train for this, we're better equipped,” said Officer Michael Joyner. “There's safety in numbers and we certainly have the numbers. Call us, call 911, we're going to respond and trust me, we know what we're doing. We will act appropriately to handle any situation that arises.”
There haven't been any burglaries since September 19th, but Joyner is urging residents to follow the tips as a safety precaution.
