FORT WAYNE, Indiana (www.incnow.tv) -- Because of crime on the southeast side of Fort Wayne, a popular business will not allow its employees to deliver to certain parts of town after four p.m.

A few of the drivers for Waiter on the Way feared for their safety when they were harrassed and threatened by groups of people who surrounded their delivery cars on the southeast side.

After this happened a few times, the restaurant delivery service decided it would no longer take food to parts of that area after four p.m., and even then, it would only be to customers who'd used the service before.

The owner acknowledges that 99% of the people who live in the affected service areas are not the problem, but says he cannot risk his employees' safety for the other one percent.

Police Chief Rusty York says that's troubling to hear.

"We've gotten into some situations where it was a little scary for them, and they just didn't feel as comfortable going and making those deliveries as some of the other ones. So we just decided to make safety even more of a priority than it was before, and had to make a few changes," says Derek Berkes, who owns Waiter on the Way.

"We not only do additional patrols, but we focus on the individuals and attempt to get them back off the street. If it's through probation, violating their probation, or their parole," says Fort Wayne Police Chief Rusty York.

There were three shootings in the area in three days -- two homicides and now one man remains in critical condition.

Chief York says his officers are using every tool at their disposal to crack down on crime everywhere in the city.
