INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (21Alive) -- The Indiana Attorney General announced a settlement today that will see consumers overcharged for propane receive restitution.
According to the Attorney General's Office, Ashland Propane Demotte, LLC overcharged its customers this past winter, and will now pay out nearly $20,000 in restitution as part of the settlement.
“During the worst of the winter, our priority was to make sure Hoosiers had access to heat,” Zoeller said in a statement today. “When propane prices skyrocketed, there was concern that the hundreds of thousands of Hoosier consumers who rely on propane to heat their homes could be taken advantage of during the crisis. Ashland’s customers who were overcharged will be made whole after the company’s failure to honor its contracts.”
An investigation revealed that Ashland delivered to more than 200 non "pre-buy" consumers, despite telling contracted consumers they were experiencing a shortfall. To the Attorney General, this indicated Ashland had enough propane to fulfill its contracts
